WARNING DO NOT BUY Whirlpool Duet washing machine

If this helps just one person to NOT BUY this machine...THE WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE....then it would be good. I wish I could make a site that would make it to everyone who would consider buying a WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE, so I could WARN them NOT TO BUY this machine.
WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE DO NOT BUY

WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE

REPEAT DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE, THE WHIRLPOOL DUET

The house I bought under construction was built for this machine to fit under a counter in the laundry. Oh how I WISH I had CHECKED the INTERNET before purchasing it. OH THE PROBLEMS that the WHIRLPOOL DUET does have.
PROBLEMS PROBLEMS PROBLEMS
The repair company recommended in the WHIRLPOOL DUET manufacturer's guide (via a phone number) CANNOT FIX it.
The WHIRLPOOL HOTLINE DOES NOT GIVE ME ACCESS to their TECHNICIANS to ask them questions.
They say they will set up an appointment for me for another repair company, the ONE THEY REALLY RECOMMEND. I wish they would have really recommended them before I chose the one on the list recommended by the store that actually sold me the machine. Yes, I have tried so hard to do all the right things with this machine, that I wanted to use a company that was not only on the whirlpool list, but that had a good reputation with the store selling the machine. So I went to the store and they didn't hesitate to recommend Royal Appliance.
It's funny, but they didn't even have the WHIRLPOOL DUET on the selling floor anymore.
TOO MANY PROBLEMS, possibly?
This week I went back to the appliance store to ask about the machine, and told them of my problem with the repair company (whose name I did not mention) not being able to fix it,and they didn't hesitate to ask,"oh, was it A and E?"........mental note to self......."never use A and E"
They said WHIRLPOOL SHOULD REPLACE THE MACHINE IF THEIR RECOMMENDED REPAIR COMPANY COULD NOT FIX IT.
Well, their recommended repair company says there is nothing wrong with the machine. Isn't that convenient? Do you think they could be working together?
WHIRLPOOL makers of the WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE TO THEIR RECOMMENDED REPAIR COMPANIES, "Uhhhhh, if you can't fix a machine, just say it's not broken....yeah, that's good. Then we're all off the hook!!!!!!!! You, the repair company can rack up hundreds of dollars of repair fees, while not even fixing the machine, and neither you nor we - WHIRLPOOL are responsible. GENIOUS!!
And when the customer calls to say the WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE doesn't work, despite over $500 worth of repairs, WE WILL ACTUALLY OFFER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH ANOTHER REPAIR COMPANY ON OUR LIST, so they, too, can rack up hundreds of dollars more worth of useless repairs. And we will tell the customer that this second repair company is the one that should have been called IN THE FIRST PLACE, because it's our number one recommended repair company, despite the fact that we do not dIstinguish them as such via our phone information. It's funny how their number one recommended repair company has a bad reputation with Factory Builders in Houston, the store of purchase of the WHIRLPOOL DUET.
I really wonder if they would make me go through all five of their recommended repair companies if they systematically could not fix the WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE.
I will never know.......it's tempting......because this is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ....spending so much money to get the thing and $ 500 more to try to get it repaired, not to mention the inconvenience of the entire situation.
Oh how I long for my Sears Kenmore out in the garage, where I had to battle all the wildlife Houston has to offer (except for the coyote, thank goodness). I had to fight rain and cold and heat, but at least I could soak things, or add an item to the machine more than five minutes after starting, and I could tell if the machine was really getting the temperature water it was supposed to, AND my clothes were always clean. Not so with the WHIRLPOOL DUET.

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE, THE WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHING MACHINE

The internet is full of problems that people have with this machine. My husband thinks any positive reviews were placed there by Whirlpool.

Our PROBLEM IT WILL NOT RINSE SUDS OUT OF THE CLOTHES

HENCE, OUR CLOTHES DO NOT EVER GET CLEAN!

REPEAT DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT BUYING THIS MACHINE!

THE WHIRLPOOL DUET = NIGHTMARE

You might do better to explain WHY not to buy this washer than to just repeat over and over IN ALL CAPS the name of the machine and ramble on about it. Seriously I only found your site yet you claim there are sites all over the internet claiming problems. Where???

What a KOOK!!!

RHRB said...

She does explain here why not to buy this machine: hers would not rinse suds out of clothes, and when she called Whirlpool about the problem, they provided horrible customer service. After she spent hundreds of dollars trying to get the problem fixed by one of their recommended repair people, Whirlpool told her simply to try another of their recommended repair people b/c they didn't really trust the first company they had recommended!

Other problems with this machine: links pasted at the bottom of this comment. This particular machine was obviously a lemon, since there are people out there who are happy with the Whirlpool Duet, too. But Whirlpool should replace lemons or at least help people get them fixed for less than hundreds of dollars.

You'd get a little kooky, too, if you had spent months dealing with this problem, being given the runaround by Whirlpool, and schlepping your dirty clothes over to your daughter's house all the time.

Thanks rhrb.
I think I explained in detail why "not to buy this machine".
I wonder how one "only finds this site" in connection to this machine??
There are seemingly endless amounts of sites commenting on the problems with this machine, and I believe Mr. Kook and I read most of them, as we searched for anything that would help us find a solution to getting ours fixed.
All we had to do was use google. Try it anonymous! And why are you anonymous anyway? What are you afraid of?

One thing I learned about all front load washers is to use only about 2 tablespoons of HE detergent. Any more and the machine creates too many suds and will eventually burn out the tub bearing. That is what happened on mine and it shook around so bad on spin cycle it shorted out a circuit board. To the trash heap and I am buying a Maytag (which is really Whirlpool with a different name plate)

DO NOT BUY WHIRLPOOL DUET STEAM WASHER & DRYER!

I live in Ontario, Canada and last Boxing Day we purchased the new Duet Whirlpool Steam Washer and Dryer! Within the first two weeks we noticed all of our clothes were stain by what looked like blue detergent. To add to our troubles, our new steam dryer was not "steaming"??

We called and shortly after they sent a tech to try and fix the problem. Sure enough the tech determined the dispenser switch was broken, thus not enough water was entering the washer, and thus the detergent was being spilled onto the clothes without any water causing the damage. He also determined the steam dryer's mother board was broken and needed to be replaced.

We called Whirlpool to request them to pay for our damaged clothes. (appx 2 loads worth)...and without a flinch they refused and referred me to their warranty. There warranty states they are not responsible for any damage outside of the machine....WOW!

So, we washed our clothes as per their instructions, and their tech determined that the machine was broken, and because of their broken machine that stained our clothes....they are not responsible?

This company is the worst to deal with, ZERO customer service and no accountability! After a couple of calls with their "manager" who basically said, sorry that the machines casused the damage, but we are covered legally by the warrenty...sorry

Do ALL yourself a favour and buy LG...DO NOT BUY WHIRLPOOL DUET!

I just sold my Whirlpool Duet this morning and could not be happier to see them go. My clothes have been locked in the machine for the last week and at least twice a week befor that. I had to unplug and replug to reset the circuit board. It had error code after error code, not to mention tangled up clothes that were not clean. I have so many stains left on my baby girls clothes, even after I soaked and prewashed these machines would not get them out. My mom's machines, simple top loader, gets them out every time. I could not have been more disgruntled with this washer. After 4 four years, I sold the dryer and included the washer for free, I even tried to warn the people that bought them from me. Everyone is so excited about the front-load high efficiency. Give me an old top loader and I am HAPPY.

My Duet keeps eating my kids socks causing them to get stuck in the drain and all the water to flow out of the detergent tray and onto my floor. I hate this unit but I hate SEARS more. Five days to get a tech out to deal with this issue is unacceptable and they refuse to dicuss the flood issue.

The solution to your problem is as follows:use powdered HD detergent, and not so much (avoid the liquid HD). Use HD only. As I have made this mistake (and you, too) take the bottom front cover off of the machine (screws in the bottom front flange). Before you is a drain like apparatus with a turning handle. Place a towel under this, and turn...a bit of water will flow out. This is a drain flow trap which gets clogged with too much detergent or other debris. Remove, clean, replace. It will now rinse properly and for all you mold problem people, this will eliminate any mold problems. Do this expercise quarterly and run a machine clean tab once every couple months and the washer will work like a charm.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! bought our Duet in spring 2008, one year later it stopped working. i performed the diagnostic test and got the error code for a new INTERFACE COMPUTER BOARD. those computer boards cost $400 just for the part!!!! imagine if i called a technician...he would've charged me $400 just to take a look at it.

Whoever this person is saying do not buy a duet, maybe they are not as smart as the washer,I have owned a duet set since 2002, The washer and dryer have been wonderful, until recently the washer was throwing error codes the codes I seen was f02 and sud. When you see these codes, go to this website:http://www.repair-help.com/kb/index.php?article=544,

It has a number of error codes with the solutions, my problem was a matter of taking off the panel on the front just below the door, it has three torx screws remve those and the panel should come off, then there is a round lid , unscrew the lid( the lid is about 2-3 inches Diameter)then you pull the strainer out rinse out the lint and gunk, I never knew there was a filter/strainer, good sales staff at Lowes. Any way this solved my error codes, Oh I also found a couple of quarters, woohoo I rich

RHRB said...

Oddly, james, the repairmen recommended by Whirlpool were also "not as smart as the washer." If Whirlpool cannot provide a washer that works, they should at least recommend repairmen who know how to fix it--especially since those repairmen must be paid above and beyond the price you paid for the washer in the first place!

Hey, what a nice blog its informative blog i like very much,One of the most reliable suppliers of water filtering systems is the Whirlpool company. A quality water filter from Whirlpool will give your family the fresh, healthy clean tasting water you desire. If you have been buying bottled water to make sure your water is clean, now is the time to switch to filtering your own water.
Thanks for this nice blog.

Thanks to poster that gave info on checking for clog.

Pulling off lower front cover was a pain. Why they can't use phillips screw heads is beyond me. Poor design - difficult to get screws out.

ANY AND ALL WATER IN the tub when you unscrew the drain cap IS GOING TO COME OUT. BE prepared. I had a pan. I got a shop vac - quickly.

I had no error codes. Machine just wouldn't drain.

My Whirlpool Duet washer is two years old. The drum bearing failed. Apparently this is a standard problem Whirlpool refuses to admit. Called Whirlpool, they will cover the part but not the labor which is $292.00 - WOW, a third of what I paid for the washer. Reminder to self, never buy Whirlpool again!

Anonymous said...

We too bought the Whirlpool Duet Frontloader washer and dryer. The dryer is kinda broken, makes alot of noise, even when there's no load. It's 3 years, only my Wife and I use it, what a piece of junk!!!!

Anonymous said...

We just had to chuck our Duet out the door after only five months and eight hundred dollars later. The one thing we liked about the washer was the fact of using less detergent, but the bearings still burned up on it.POS!!!!!! At least we did get eight years out of the Maytag Neptune stackable unit we paid $2000.00 for thinking it would last for fifteen years. Buy a cheap washer and dryer. They last forever.

Anonymous said...

This rant was completely senseless and useless.

RHRB said...

Not senseless and useless if it prevents anyone from buying a washing machine from this line, which, based on the other comments, turns out more than its fair share of lemons.

Anonymous said...

we have had these machines for over a year now and we think they are awsome not one problem, and no i don't work for whirlpool or a repair company.

Anonymous said...

I just want others to know about my problem. My complaint with the Whirlpool Duet washing machine is that mine would leak water into the tub when the machine was off. I made numerous service calls all with the same response -- there is nothing wrong with the machine, you must be accidentally turning it on or you have a drain problem and the water is backing into the machine. The water was clean water so I did not think there was a drain problem, but had a plumber confirm it. I finally just gave up and bought a new top load washer and dryer and could not be happier. The guy who took my old ones said he wanted to look at it because he suspected it had a leaking water control valve. Guess what, he was right and is now using it after replacing a $45 part. UNBELIEVABLE, this guy who had never worked on washing machines before could figure this out in 30 minutes, yet numerous Whirlpool recommended repairmen thought I was crazy and kept telling me there was nothing wrong with the machine. JUST BEWARE!!

Anonymous said...

Our drum bearing is also failing after only 2.5 years. Our repairman, from the store where we bought it back in September '08, told us the part we needed was $450 and labor $240. My wife just got off of the phone with Whirlpool. They won't do anything for us except say that we should have bought the extended warranty.

Well, looking for the silver lining, at $1,000 for 940 days of ownership, it comes out to about a dollar a day. Nah, it still isn't making me feel any better.

Off to Sears in the next few days before this expensive piece of junk seizes up.

I got mine at central rent to own last month and it immeditaly started leaking out the front door well the guys came back watched it leak yet again then decided to haul it away and bring back another brand new one out of the manufacturers box well today I just did a load of clothes and went back in the hallway to find that my entire hallway is flooded it sucks my hallway is covered in carpet and now have to borrow my brother's shopvac. After reading more of these reviews I am seriously thinking of going back to Central rent to own and exchanging these before it's too late; no way it should be leaking when it came out of the manufacturers box a month ago and been replaced once all ready. This makes the 4th time total this has leaked on me in a month.

I've bad my duet for 6 years and the only problem Ive had was "Me"using too much detergent. Once I learned not to use so much detergent its been the best washed and dryer set o e had.

Anonymous said...

I agree, stay away from whirlpool duet. We have the sport. It started leaving grease spots on our clothes, we thought maybe it was residual grease, used the washer cleaner several times, only to find out that the tub bearings were bad after less than two years. The price of new bearings is almost the cost of a new unit.

I agree with you 100%. Everyone who sees this post, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. I bought a Whirlpool Duet Steam Washing Machine (Model no. WFW9600TW00) and less than 13 months after I purchased it, the pressure switch went out. I had to shell out over $200 in labor to get it fixed because I had not purchased a warranty. At the time, Whirlpool told me I was in the wrong and had used the wrong detergent or too much of the right detergent. This claim was false. I have always used HE detergent at the recommended amounts. Back then, I convinced Whirlpool to supply the part because the warranty had just expired.

In May 2011, the exact same part failed. I had purchased a 3-year warranty with a company that has a contract with Whirlpool to only use genuine Whirlpool parts. Only THIS TIME, THE PART HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED.

Because Whirlpool has taken the part off the recommended repair list, my company cannot fix the machine, even if they have the faulty part. LEMON! LEMON!!!

This machine is only 4 years old!!!

I understand that Whirlpool has asked another company to retool and remanufacture the part but it has been on backorder for going on two months (that I know of). The original availability date was June 24th. It has now been pushed back to July 6th.

I cannot wash clothes without a new switch. I found the faulty switch online but Whirlpool refuses to obtain it for me. They also refuse to reimburse me for the money I have to shell out to wash my clothes at a laundromat.

This washer is a LEMON!

Even after I told them how much money I have spent on their appliances (over $7000), they were not willing to help me out on this.

Just so you will know, I currently have a KitchenAid Gas Range, a KitchenAid Superba Side-by-Side Refigerator Freezer, a Whirlpool Duet Steam Washer and Dryer set, and just purchased the newest KitchenAid Dishwasher.

I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER KITCHENAID OR WHIRLPOOL APPLIANCE AGAIN because of their refusal to help out a loyal customer.

Excuse me....make that A ONCE loyal customer!!!!!!!!

I am making it a point to tell everyone I meet and everyone I know the problems I have incurred with Whirlpool.

I had heard that they were having problems with sales; now I know why.

My duet front load also is out of balance at high speeds, it needs a new drum bearing. You can only get the bearing with the drum, very expensive. I have replaced the door hinged 3 times, water flow sensor once and the water solinoid valve twice. It washes great but does not last and for the money it should last for years. I also have the matching dryer and have had the replace the heater and then the heat sensors. NEVER will I buy another whirlpool product. Please keep this in mind when buying a new washer and dryer.

A salesman at a large local appliance store, Yale Appliance, talked me into a Whirlpool - WFW9470WW. While waiting for delivery I read many terrible reviews of Whirlpool and the WFW9470WW in particular. When the delivery guys hesitated to install it in the designated space I jumped at this last chance reprieve on told them to keep it on the truck. I feel so relieved. I got a pair of LGs of the same size from Sears and the Sears delivery people installed them no problem. You are helping people by warning them off of these machines. Thanks

My whirlpool duet sport was only 2 1/2 years old. I replaced both main components $500+ twice. I have been having trouble since June 9th, today is Aug. 20. The last time the technician replaced both computer boards I thought it was fixed. It worked for 2 weeks. I'm getting the same codes again. F70 & F71 I've called whirlpool and they are not helpful they said they could help if I would have used the service company they recommend. I saw where A&E did not have very good reviews this is why I did not go with them. My model # is 9200SQ02. I hope this helps someone in the future.

We purchased the Bay's extended warranty, which was offered for a good price, but when I needed to call the repairman he actually said everything was fine & handed me an Affresh tablet (one tablet)to use & suggested I use one monthly. One package of 3 costs almost $10. Now my washer is locked & my clothes are hostages inside!!

My Whirlpool Duet stinks. So much for HE. What is the point when you have to rewash EVERYTHING over again. And, if you have to use one of those new product to 'maintenance' the washer every week, it doesn't fall under High Efficiency.
I have cleaned it by hand, bleached it, kept the door open between loads, etc. All to no avail.
Now, I am having migraines, feel sick, and my whole house smells of mold and mildew.
This is not 'going green'. It is growing mold instead. We should not have to put up with an inferior product. These problems are manufacturing issues that have been well known since at least 2003, and nothing has changed. I am joining a Class Action against Whirlpool.

I agree - don't ever buy this machine. I bought mine 14 months ago and after the 12 month warranty expired it leaked like crazy and I had to spend $165 to fix it. Event the technician agreed it was crap. Whirlpool refused to pay for repairs or do anything for it. It is really a piece of crap.

We have a duet and also have had problems. The latest is it works but only light the bottom cycle options, unplugging worked sometimes but now we just use the bottom cycles on the dial. Note: We had luck running the rinse/drain cycle when the door locks up. Maybe someone can help on the cycle issue,

My Whirlpool Duet is 13 months old and the control board just died. Whirlpool has been less than useless, even hostile about it. All the repairman asked was they pay for the part and Whirlpool refused. I am so sorry I bought this and after reading about all the potential problems I am trying to figure out how to get rid of it. Will forward this site to everyone I know.

Thanks for the blog. Came here to learn about my Duet washer; tub is wobbling inside the plastic drum, appears to be the soap / bearing issue. After reading this I am going to avoid wasting money on repair attempts and replace/recycle the machine.

I have a Whirlpool Duet that I purchased in June of 2010. 23 months later I have spent $367 to replace the pressure sensor and my washer is still not working. The repairman said I now need a CPU "motherboard". The repairman said he sees this all of the time with Whirlpool. So now I am going to pay another $300 for the motherboard "at repairman's cost" Lowe's (where I purchased the unit) and Whirlpool have been zero help. How can Whirlpool continue to turn their head while so many customers are unhappy?

My 1.5 year old Whirlpool Duet washing machine now needs a 457.29 new outer tub assembly because the bearings have worn out. With labor and tax I have a grand total of 724.73 to repair a 1.5 year old (new) washing machine. Even before the problems started I wasn't thrilled about the way it cleaned. Stain removal required multiple washes even with Shout and Oxyclean. Please listen to the warnings on this site....avoid the Duet or it will cost you!

Spent 300 on my duet and it still has door lock failure and f11 error codes daily. PIECE OF JUNK! The only reason I can use it sometimes is by using CPU codes to reset and manually unlocking the door with the front cover removed. No drain, no spin. Wash cycle lights on yet the tub stands still for the whole washing cycle.

Error Code F70, F71 etc. all over the palce. Replace main control board with more than $150, no luck. It will take another $250 to replace motor control board, this is just for the part, labor on myself.

Time to replace my 2-year old Whirlpool Duet washer. What a shame from the manufacture! And this is Made in USA. Shame on Whirlpool!

I agree these are crap. Our first washer was not as problematic, but at least it seemed to work though my wife was never satisfied with the wash. Lasted about 4 years. We foolishly got another because we have a home service contract that replaced, and we still had the dryer that matched. The new one has been a problem from the start. Very seldom will it get through a wash without stopping and beeping with the door locked. The only solution is to unplug and restart, sometimes it finishes, sometimes it stops again. Repair person out half dozen times with no solutions. We will never again buy a frontload. I have no idea what teh advantage is supposed to be, because when they work they are still a royal pain in the posterior.

I,ve had a duet washer since 2006. Only problem I've had until now, almost 2018, was replacing the pump after about four years. Pump was easy to order online and I installed it myself. Now I need to replace the door hinge or at least the pin bushings. GUESS WHAT, hinge is no longer available. Nor parts for it. There is a long list of parts that are unavailable for for these machines. Maybe it's because of Sear's demise. Parts pro agent told me to check with salvage yards. I assume, other washers under the sears umbrella are having the same problem. After all, Whirlpool is just a name. They don't make the washers. I'll never buy anything that's associated with Sears. Sears makes/made washers for several companies.

Own a duet washer and dryer since 2016. At 4 years in the ccu in the washer went out. The part is $350. We spent $2800 for the pair with pedestals. We are now retired and cannot afford a new washer. Never buy whirlpool. Their electronics are junk.
